The gut brain connection

Nutrition not only supports physical health, but mental health too. Did you know your gut and brain are in constant conversation? This powerful connection, known as the gut-brain axis, is a two-way communication system linking your digestive tract with your central nervous system. It means that what you eat doesn’t just fuel your body, it can also shape your mood, and effect your concentration and emotional resilience. At the heart of this connection is the gut microbiome, a diverse community of trillions of bacteria that help regulate everything from digestion to neurotransmitter production. When these bacteria are nourished with fibre-rich fruit and vegetables, fermented foods, and healthy fats, they send calming, stabilising signals to the brain. But when there is imbalance, it can contribute to anxiety, low mood and brain fog. Omega 3 fatty acids (flaxseed, walnuts, oily fish) are especially beneficial for brain health.

Self-care tip: Support your gut-brain axis by including prebiotic foods like garlic, leeks, banana and oats, and probiotic-rich options like kefir, sauerkraut, and live yogurt in your meals. Try the mood busting smoothie recipe under the Resources section. That is indeed food for thought!
