RHODES
to health
Our gut and our brain are in constant conversation. This powerful connection, known as the gut-brain axis, is a two-way communication system linking your digestive tract with your central nervous system. This means that what you eat doesn’t just fuel your body, it can also shape your mood, and effect your concentration and emotional resilience. At the heart of this connection is the gut microbiome, a diverse community of trillions of bacteria that help regulate everything from digestion to neurotransmitter production. When these bacteria are nourished with fibre-rich fruit and vegetables, fermented foods, and healthy fats, they send calming, stabilising signals to the brain. But when there is imbalance, it can contribute to anxiety, low mood and brain fog. Omega 3 fatty acids (flaxseed, walnuts, oily fish) are especially beneficial for brain health. This smoothie is rich in prebiotic foods (banana and oats), probiotics (in the form of Greek yoghurt), and omega 3-rich flaxseed.
Blend together the following ingredients and enjoy:
-
1 banana
-
¼ cup of rolled oats (choose gluten free if on a gluten free diet)
-
¾ cup milk of choice
-
2 tablespoons Greek yoghurt
-
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
-
¼ teaspoon of cinnamon
-
1 tablespoon nut butter (almond or peanut works well)
-
Optional : add 1 teaspoon of honey for extra sweetness
